habitants by the researches of Mr.
Joseph Jacobs and Mr. M. D.
Davis, both of whom have favoured
me with interesting notes on the
subject. Mr. Jacobs has succeeded
in constructing a plan of the Jewry,
and in identifying the sites of: the
dwellings of the principal families.
Mr. Davis has translated many
Hebrew title-deeds and other docu¬
ments. It is therefore quite pos¬
sible both to know where and how

they lived, and to trace several
generations and their connections
in York, Lincoln, and other cities.
The Jewry seems to have been
on the north side of Cheap; the
streets occupied being Lade Lane,
Cateaton Street, now Gresham
Street, and a corner of Lothbury ;
while Lawrence Lane on the west
and the Old Jewry on the east
formed two other boundaries.
The chief synagogue was near
St. Lawrence's Church, and a
