eAet. December 32. - page four Our Polish observer, who underlines that fact, recalls once again the importance given by the Soviet Union to the Polish Republic as link - in East-West direction - between Moscow and the German Democratic Republics The powerful Russian water system is to be connected with the Bast German rivers and channels. Such project involves, for Poland, a water net - to be constructed or regulated of nearly 2.000 kilometer length. One of its main features will be the regulation of the Pug river, which forms an important part of the border between the Soviet Union and the present Polish territory. Leading into the Vistula and, through it, to the Baltic sea port of Gdynia, the Bug is to become a vital transportation road. It will link directly the Ukrainian and Bé&elorussian Republics to the North and the East. - Further projects will continue and develop the above water line, joining it to the Oder Basin and, through the German channel system, to the Elbe, which in turn drains not only Eastern Germany, but also Bohemia. There is another project, which Poland and Czecho-"lovakia will have in common: the future Oder—Danube channels, Planned to start at Kozle on the Oder, in Poland's mining and industrial area, it is to lead southward through Czecho-Slovakia and to make the connection to the Danube and the entire Hungarian water system. According to both our Polish and Slovak informants, this ambitious project has been postponed for a while, All the available labor force and resources indeed are used for other plans to which first priority has been given. This is above all the constuuttion and development of the "Ruhr basin of the Hast": the combined PolishCzechoslovakian modern and intensive mining and industrial basin. In Poland, top priority is given to the Upper Silesian projects, in Czecho-Slovakia to the "Nova Hutna Klement Gottwald" in the Ostrava-Karvinna project. With high pressure placed on armamant production, Moscow has informed both Warsaw and Prague that the development of the mines and the construction of the giant steel and metallurgical plants had to advance at a much greater speed that had been the case up to noWe his is the reason why, for the time being, the Oder=-Danube channel project bad to be pushed back into the files; while the Bug river constructions and the Oder-Vistula connection - in other terms, the water ro@ds linking Russia with Germany - are continued as before. : Fuge propaganda is made in the Czech press around a project! which is relatively small in scope: the fertilization of the “outh Moravian plains; located between the rivers March and Thaya. A dried out country of extensive sugar beah culture, it is now to be irrigate from an artificial lake to be constructed in the knee of the Thaya rivere Once the lake and the channel system finished, authorities promise the most intensive culture of fruits, vegetables, tobacco, wine, rice and cotton. vur informant feels that the aim for akk thes intensive propaganda around that’promisea paradise is nothing byt to make people forget that projects previously discussed and expected have not been started as yet.e. 1t means also raising hopes for an improving agricultural and food situation. a ae Is
