ALLIS CHALMERS MANUFACTURING COMPANY

In 1946 the labor unions at the company's main plant near
Milwauke decided to strike for higher wages and other benefits.
The management felt, that the unions demand were unressonable and
after some efforts the negociations broke down. The longer the
strike lasted, the more nerves were on ege, Communist influence
was unmistakable. Lawlessness and finalle riots broke out. The po¬
lice was too weak} the army had to be sent to restore order, After
more than a year the strike finally collapsed and the unions hat
to accept the employers terms. This result wes achieved purely by
the iron nerves of the management. ee

In June 1950, Allis Chalmers signed a five year contract
