Most alYarming news have been reaching us lately, reporting
on present conditions in Carpatho-tkrainia. it will be recalled that
this small mountain country was was ceded by Czech rresicent benes
to the USSR in 1945. it was incorporated into the Ukradnian Soviet
Socialist Republic. The reason why Moscow had claimed that territory
was an entirely strategic one. A glance at the map will explain that
this corner in the Carpath mountain chain is the dominating point that
controls the whole Carpath and Danube Basin: Slovakia, Hungary and
Transsylwania. It is the natural road that links the graat HKussian
plains to hungary and from there on to Austria, Yugoslavia, italy
and Switzerland. une of the main strategic Mast-West roads thus leads
trough the varpatho-Ukraine and it is not astonishing that since
its annexation, the soviets have started important strategical works
in that regione The most consequential is the new railroag, of which

As to the new elite - the intellectuals, the specialists, the professior:
nals, the public employees etc. - it was gathered from all over the
Soviet Union. In the main city of Uzgorod, a Soviet University was
opened. It has to form the new young elite of the country, that will
become a Soviet model district: Hussian in language and culture;
communist in ideology and organizations
This ruthless exchange and mixture of population, - as is
tragically shown in the recent Carpatho-Ukranian example - is but one
instance of a total Soviet plane The figures tossed around in that
Soviet game are entire populations, many millions of peoples Since
1945, this plan has been carried out systematicallye its aifferent
practical steps were: expulsions, deportations and the east-west
migration of populations, called to fill out the established vacuum.
