REPORT FROM HUNGARY.

os situation.
e most str ng factor underlying all the reports

received from Hungary is the rapidly inereasing military preparation
and the extremely important strategie movements that are now taking
place in that satellite country.

Under the pretense of maneuvers and of instruetion#, the
Russian divisions in Hungary have been kept in continuous movement,
The most important change oecwred in April. At that moment, Russian
units, re-inforced by troops that had been stationed in Austria, were
transferred from the border line of the Austrian provinee of Burgen¬
land to the inner part of thé country, Only very small Russian
detachments remained for police purposes along the Western frontier.
The main forees are now coneentrated in the area South-West of Buda¬
ai between the heights of the Bakony Wood and the Balaton Lake.

ese troop movements eprrespond with a simuléaneous inerease in
Russian air activityes. Frequgntly Russian military pa&ne units are
landing on one §$ the three main air fields: pa in the West,
Kecskemét in the exact center and Debrecen in the East of the country.
They usually stay a few days then leave again for an unknown destinatic

In the vieinity of these air bases, and not in Budapest, are
the real Russian military headquarters. The resort place of Bujae¬
puszta especially has been for two years now the eenter of high
Russian military activities. Hotels and the entire area is taken over
by the Soviet headquarterse Telephon and telegraph wires have been
leid in great number. Circulation of Russian military cars and planes —
is intense. Very strict control by road bloeks and patrols has been
established: even farmers living in the region are constantly stopped
and searched. A similar concentration of high-ranking Russian military
officials is reported from Szombathely in the Westermmost part of the
country. They came only in April, simul@e@neouhiy with the general
movement that transferred from those same border areas the troops to
the South-West of Budapest. This newly established Szombathely head¬
querter had previously been stationed for two years in Austria, in the
vicinity of Vienna, and has now been taken over the border into the
first city on Hungarian soildg

To sum up the Russian moves: Troops have been re-inforeed
from the West and not, as up to now, from the East. They were trans¬
ferred further to the East, that is away from the Austrian border to
the area of Budapest. Headquarter and air foree activities have also
been strongly inereased. They have three main centers: Szombathely-and
Papa in the West, Keeskemet in the center, Debrecen in the East,

But not only Russian headquarters, troops and air force are
speeding up preparetion and concentration, Hungary itself has also bee
ordered to start a tremendous military effort. Since April all reserve
officers have been recalled for a three-months active training period,
that is carried out in camps all over the country. At the same time
several thousand workérs from Hungarian factories have been asked to
"“vyolunteer" for officers‘ training courses.
