groups - such as the associations of employers, of trade and
commerce, of banking and financial establishments - have violently
protested and promised full support to the government. The powerful
labor machine, trying to maneuver in too clever a fashion, seems

to have overdone, It has now clearly taken position along with the
socialist and éhe Eastern German propaganda, This might even lead to
a split in the Union itself, With growing discontent in the rank-and¬
file against the dictatorial attitude of the "managers" body", it is
more than likely that the old Christian Unions will be revived and
will secede from the DGB. Such new labor group, together with the
conservative elements in polities and economie life, will be ready to
pack the gove nmentts electoral campaigue

work at full speed in preparation of the 1955 clections: the present
governmental coalition, supported by the whole conservatéve group
and the Christian elements; the socialists of the Schumacher types
packed by the neutralists and by the leftist Workers’ Unione e
expellees finally, despite pressures and promises, will more than
likely line up with Chancellor Adenauer.

This total evolution should be earefully watched: the
future of Europe largely depends on the outcome of this campaign.
