One incumbent, John Larke, was a friend of Sir Thomas More, and, like him, was put to death for denying the supremacy of Henry VIII. Of St. Helen’s a great deal has been written and might be written, for it is as remarkable for its connection with the names of great folk, as St. Ethelburga is for their absence. Of the fabric of the church there is not much to be said. The south doorway is as interesting as any other part of the church, and must have had several narrow escapes at the hands of restorers, for it is in a wholly incongruous style, being dated 1633.
