XeAeNrel3d. for November 1952. REPORTS FROM HUNGARY. ak secret leaflet. A pocket-size clandestine magazkuz review, issued by the Hungarian resistance, has done a great deal to strengthen the morale of those it could reach, Intitled "Magyar Jövő", the "Hungarian Future its first issue appeared in January and has continued since on a monthly basis. Its circulation is at best a couple of thousand and covers mostly Budapest. It is indeed much easier to hand out secret material in a large center, than it is in small towns where controls are much mare thorough. However, this illegal publication covers much more people than the few thousands who actually read ite Under a terror regime the most effective way to spread news is always the oral ane. It is amazing how far and how fast news travel by that simple means, despite or even because of strict police measures. Reports received from various centers in the country state that people know already that this clandestine paper exists and has been read hy in Budapeste But not only its mere existence is known, but also " and quite correctly - the content of its articles and news itemse All the comments received are unanimously favorable. ‘+cople express satisfaction to know that such publication exists, circulates and that the Secret Police seems unable to retrace and stop it. this fact alone gives a deep feeling of strength anu of courage. Moreover — and also unanimously — people agree with form and content of the paper. They feel that it gives them exactly what they want and neede “Magyar Jövő" then is wrttten by people who = living behind the Iron Curtain - know in its minutests details the prevailing méntality and reaction. It is fully approved by those who read it or | hear about ite In view of this double fact, it is of greatest interest to note the trends of thought, as expressed by the reviewe Im gives indeed a unique and most precious insight on what people in Hungary itself~ think of the present and wish for the future. The fundamental trends of thought that strike the reader of this illegal leaflet are the folbowing most revealing facts: 197 Not one line in the whole publication contains any Party politics; it remains constantly on a level above political parties. this is once more the evident proof that populations who live today under the communistic rule, are far from being interested - they are even disgusted = by the splitting into small groups fighting each other. For people behind the Iron Curtain, the problem goes much deeper: it is a question of smuxyviwak life and death, of individual survival and of safeguard of our whole Christian civilization and ideologye This is the huge error often commétted by Western radio programs, aimed at | reaching the people in the Haste Our observers in Hungary - as well as in the German Democratic Republic and other countries = bitterly complain about that lack of understanding, shown in the West and very SO - .
