In scanning through the iitterally hundreds of reports, which are reaching us in the course of one month, one can not fail to be impressed by owe fact : out of innumerable small detaisl, an over=a11 patter clearly emerges.e And this pattern to which every= thing, including politics, economics, social and religious affairs age subordinate, is the feverish, unrelenting effort to make the country ready for war. Without wanting to be unduly alerming, it is the duty of this observer to draw very seriously the attention on this fact, since it permits serious conclusionse We should not pemmit ourselves to get to much accustomed to these facts, hence to overlook them, und then to be met, at a time chosen by the enemy with a fatal surprise. We shovld clearly understand, that while it would be an error to conclude that war is close at hand, is only a matter of months away, it nevertheless is absolutely clear that the ultimate goal of every single move made in this part of the warld is war! In fact, this is becoming so obvious, that even the less informed elements of the population are understanding thise And thet they gravely worry when they hear pacifist or neutralist voices coming to them from the Weste In the political field, there is one news of importance t the leadership of the Hungarian Workers ( Communist ) Party has received theorder to reorganize itself exactly on the pattern that will be decided at the Moscow Congress of the Bolshevik Partye ; Tis reorganization, which is expected before the end of the year, pwobably in November, will afford Rákosi the opportunity to purge his party's leudership without having to use the normal proceedings of treason and trial. In fact, there are strong indications in our désputches, that a directive has been received in Budapest, accor= ding to which it would be detrimental to create a new stir as was the famous Rajk trial 3; consequently changes in personnel ought to be made, for the time being, without attrecting to much attention or undermining to much the confidence cf the activists in their own leadershipe As the conflict between Rakosi end Gerd is now an open secret, and as the victory of Rkosi - as we pointed out in previous reports - is now secure for all practical purposes, it seems clear that Rakosi will use the re-organization simply to push Gerd and his followers out of their positions of influence, and put them into such official positions, in which they will have no power whatsoever* In the economic field, the pattern we indicated in the introductory remarks is quite obvious, the first news of importance A,
