X.A:14 Oct 52. - page three of Nebras& and Senator Carlson of Kansas, the three most intimate advisers of Eisenhower, have been doing a very bad job. They entirely mismanaged the interview with Senator Taft, and they were extremely poor on the Nixon issue. If the Nixon affair leaves las= ting sears, it will be due to these three people, Arthur Summerfield on the other hand is first class, but Eisenhower seemsnot to take his advise on every issue. The poor management does Eisenhower a lot of useless harm. 12 / The Stevenson campaign on the other hand 41s m.anged so far with smoothness and efficiency, except for the press relations. There is much more unity and efficiency in that Camps 13 / In campaigning technique, Eisenhower scores on the Whistle stops, in smaller or medium towns ~ but these are normally Republican anyhor, He is poor in major adresses. On the other hand Stevenson does not do well extemporanecusly, but scores heavily in large towns, on radio and television. Stavenson$s jokes and hue mour have helped him more than they hurt hime 14 / Talking with professional politicians, one gains the feeling that at present both candidates stand neck-t-necks. No one in either camp dares to predict what the outcome will be, despite the usual publicity claims which have no value whatsoever. This observer still personally gives the edge to Stevenson, though an improvement in the R,publican strategy - as perhaps forced by the Nixon fneident - might change the picture, On the Nixon incident, the most important thing is that 4t was extremely badly handled by the Eisenhower staff, There was just one strategy possible * to de what Senator McCarthy did, namely hit back and expose those who did the smear. This would not have been so aifficult, since the smear was of extreme left inspirations The paper which published it was the New York Post, a half bankrupt , mor 1ly not financislly, leftist sheat, which fad shown in the past a great affinity for Communist causes, and though now officially anti Communist, still is busy always to let left wingers off, while at: tacking everybody who tries to fight Comminism. During the war, when the paper was high in favour with the Office of War Informatio n it had lost all his credit by accusing the venerable Senator David I. Walsh as en homosexual - for which lie they later on had to apologize profusely. The three men who went out to_smear S nator Nixon, where Richard AfDonovan, a reporter foe The R porter azine, a sensationalist, rather small circulation "lib@rai" sheet, Leo K at cher of the above mentioned New York Post, and finally Ernest Brashear, of the extreme left wing, q@imost Red New Republic, and of am extremsist New Deal Tabloid, the Los Angeles Daily News", They represented the worst in American-leftism. And it is know, that the American Communists had sworn to avenge on Nixon the fate of Alger Hiss, whom Nixon had brought to justice. This should have been told, and the background exposed. Thus the matter would have ended earlier. As it is, Nixon's fine come back on television made a great impresSione It might, in the end, prove a boon to the Republicans. ; S4.
