Since the Democratie Convention, our observer has been in Springfield, Ill.e, campaign headquarter of Governor Stevenson and has been oh August 5th in Los Angeles to be present at Gene— ral Eisenhower's opening Campaign speath at the VFW Convention. In the meantime he has travelied through the New England States, along the Eastern Seabord, and is making at present a surveg on the trends below the Masoh-—Dixon line in the Deep Southe -— The great Presidential cumpaign is scheduled to start now in a very few dayse On Labour Day, both Cmdidates will end their busy " vacations " of incessent Conferences, Statements end meetings. They vili now take to the roads and carry their mes~ sageeall] over the country to the peoples While the full scope of the fempaign will develop henceforth, the really decisive time has Seon the month of August, with its policy making strategy |. mectingse Henceforth no candidate will be able to shift his guns very much. The lines are drawn, and they are not likely to change between now and Novembere The first and foremost observation that can be made, is tht during this tine both candidates have been busy to “mend their fences", that is to say to see to it that the widest possible harmony should reign in their respective party. And in this endeavour, both have had to do something entirely different from their strategy in Chicago t in fact both had to go to the camp they defeuted in order to purchase its supporte be called the left wing of the Bipablicas Fariys has been busy going to the right ever since the Convention. e main exponent of this policy has been his Vice Presiddntial nominee Senator Nixon, who definitely is one of the most outstanding right-wingers of the Partye Nixon's record, as a foe of Communists, as the man who defeated Alger Hiss and got him arrested, as the prominent member of the House Un-American Activities UVommitiee, is very prominentit dispayeile His role in the campaign is most outstan— @ing.
