.. sAeNoe for Au t 2 s WESTERN GERMANY: PARLIAMENTARY SUMMER VACATIONS WITHOUT REST. A dispatch sent on West Germany last month pointed out the great importance to be attrkbuted to inner political evolutions inside the Federal Republic; especially in view of next years general elections. In the meantime, Parliamentary vacations have officially started; but political activities continue nevertheless in an almost feverish waye An observers, who has spent the last days of July and the beginning of August in Bonn and in the larger West German cities Summarizes as follwws the positions and the programs of the individual political groups. The Christian Parties. Tre Christian Parties - the CDU ("Christliche Demokratische Union) and the CSU ("Christliche Soziale Union") - are in the position of strength, for being the leading group in the governmental coalition They seem to have taken on some of the relentless energy and calm security of their head, Chancellor Adenauer. In the same way as he does, they do not use demagogic propaganda and they still abstain of greater moves and progr: matic declarations. Their aim however is clear; it is openly asked for by their electors in every meetinge It is the formation of a large, but more united, truely Christian group, that would not comppomise on essential issues and would represent enough strength to back and carry out a Christian program. Very constructive planning and preparations are now secretel going on in Bonn along those lines, Results, up to now, seem very promising. Leaders of the UDU, the CSU and the BP (Bavarian Party) have accepted that common ground. kumors speak of an impending change in the leadership of the Bavarian Party. Separastic elements shall be replaced by the more comppomising elements of this strongly anté-centralistic party. in compensation, they will be given by the CDU-CSU binding promises in the federalistic sense: the guarantee of certain regional and local autonomies. fhe other parties in the governmental coalition: FDP and DP. The liberal rarty, FDP (Freie vemokratische Fartei) has recently shown an unusually great activity. it hada indeed a double task to fulfill: bridge the gap that was opening inside the rarty and then prepare the party program for the coming electoral campaign. 7 ae
