— page four = even the majority of the Saragat Socialists wonid vote for the Mon= archy, The Monarchist Party hence is only a small fraction of the true Monarchist sentiment = and still the showing of this small fraction was impressive in big towns and rural communities alike. With that the Monarchist orgemization and leadership is poore The gso~calied official leader Marchese iucifero is no govd politician, He is a fine diplomat, a man of many achievements, but vertainly_ not @ popular leader, Besides him a new powerful force is rising, the new Monarchist Mayor of Naples, shipowner Achille Lauro. A man of great wealth and of enthusiastic political devotion, Lauro has gained snormois prestige with the masses, since he is one of the very few in Italy who put their vast fortune into politics instead of living ef it ; who is not suspect at having taken his money out of the poor at heart, His campaign against party politics, bureauj= cracy and for "our beloved King Umber$o " has given him a large following, And the gesture of his on the day of his election at the Balcony of the Royal Palace in Naples is something which the gesture=Loving Italians will not eas ly forset. Under his leadership Monarchism is likely to go places, The other right wing party, the M.SeIs is the so-called Ned-Fascist Party. It certainly is not Democratic, It is not fully Fasciste It has no elever leadership. But it certaihbly has the anthusiastic support of the very great majori=~ ty of Italy's Youth espechally the university Students, The main reason of M.S.I.'s existence is the great reaction against Democracy as imposed by the winners at Italy's defeat, Democracy in the eyes of youth is identiacal with defeat, humiliation and corrup= tion, And this is a grave thing, The M.Sele, all observers agreé, is likely to go very far, if it continues its present strategyy : -nenely to promise youth to give it the more attractive features o£ fascism ~ order, authority, efficiency — coupled with the advantages of demoeracy - human and religious freedom, This great rise is also the reason, why the Italian Parliament has yow passed a lair, which will permit to owtlaw the M.S.I. = but cextainly not the Connunistse This law is therefore odious to many in Itely, and this is the § reason why governement leaders say in private to anyone who cares to listen, that this law was imposed.on them by the Americans. Whether true or not, this is what is being said, and it does not add to America's popularity. Despite this, the present law will lead to the disbandment of M.S,I. in the £$resecable future , then @11 the elements of M.SeI. will hoin the Mpnarchist Party, with the result that it will gain a formidable forceof valuable young~ Sters, This evőlution demands closest att¢ntion. fon A11 ‘these facts will lead to apbhange of leadership \ I Vie Mend iS | ml
